How it works

The add-on reads the content of the currently open Google Document (and selected text when applicable) and computes counts based on consistent parsing rules. The results are displayed in the sidebar and updated as you work.

Typical use cases

  • Tracking writing progress in bilingual notes, reports, or coursework
  • Counting mixed Chinese and English content with predictable results
  • Quickly checking a section by highlighting it

Counting rules

  • Any punctuation does not count.
  • Each CJK character in the Unicode range \u4e00-\u9fff counts as 1.
  • English words matching [A-Za-z]+(?:\'[A-Za-z]+)? count as 1.
  • Any numeric number counts as 1 (still counts as 1 if it has its unit without a space).
  • Dates separated with / will count separately.

FAQ

  • Why do my counts differ from Google Docs™? Different counting rules can produce different totals, especially for CJK text and mixed punctuation.
  • Does it upload my document content? No. The add-on is intended to process only within the active document environment.
  • Where can I report a bug? Use the contact email on the Support & About page.
